BCR – Balanced Cylinder Ring

High Pressure Piston

BCR piston rings and rider bands for a new compressor generation

If the market is looking for smaller, more compact and at the same time more powerful compressors, only solutions that are perfect down to the smallest detail can assert themselves. Piston rings and rider bands are among those details. BCR Piston rings and rider bands made by HOERBIGER make it possible to design compressors that support higher pressure differentials with fewer piston rings compared to standard.

The resulting shorter pistons and cylinders allow compact compressor designs. BCR Piston rings and rider bands also stand out thanks to their extreme reliability and durability, considerably reducing the risk of unexpected downtime.

This is how the piston rings and rider bands work
  • Piston rings restrict the flow of gas between the piston and cylinder bore. Cylinder pressure activates the piston rings. The radial clearance between the piston ring and the piston allows the piston rings to be free floating.
  • The rider ring carries the weight of the piston and guides the piston in the cylinder bore to ensure that the piston doesn’t get in contact with the cylinder bore to avoid metal to metal contact.
Why HOERBIGER BCRpiston and guide rings?
  • Since fewer piston rings are needed, compressors can have a more compact design with shorter pistons and cylinders.
  • Maximum efficiency and reliability thanks to new piston designs with minimal tolerances.
  • Top-notch performance, even in non-lube highpressure applications with pressure differentials >100 bar.

HOERBIGER has the right piston rings and rider bands for every application

The design and construction of the piston plays an important part in cylinder ring design, upgrade and modification. With proper material selection, careful design and close tolerance machining, piston rings provide an effective seal.

BCR – Balanced Cylinder Ring at a glance:
Advantages
  • BCR enables the design of efficient high pressure compressors because of less piston ring blow-by.
  • Increased pressure differential per ring reduces number of piston rings / cylinder length.
  • Gas-tight ring design with PTFE material provides highest sealing efficiency.
  • Pressure-balanced BCR design reduces ring wear and extends ring lifetime.
  • Even wear characteristics cut the risk of unforeseen maintenance and loss of production.
  • Protection from temporary or sudden loss of lubrication.

HOERBIGER’s research and development, extensive testing and field experience has resulted in a complete portfolio of tribological materials designed for piston rings and rider bands.
